Many industry leaders—having earned award after award—tend to relax a bit. Maybe take a little break. Enjoy the acclaim. Bask in the accolades. But not 3Shape. The digital dentistry leader responsible for a flurry of headlines over the years—thanks to its leading-edge intraoral scanners and intuitive software—has literally turned the dental workflow as we know it on its head once more. The splash that was heard around the dental world happened at this year’s International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany, during which 3Shape unveiled its most transformative intraoral scanner yet, the TRIOS 6.

Redefining Scan Quality

TRIOS 6 is just one part of a multitool ecosystem designed to transform diagnostics and patient communication. If you ask Rune Fisker, Senior Vice President for Product Strategy, there are 3 objectives fueling the groundbreaking arrival of the company’s latest scanner—alongside the AI-powered TRIOS Dx  Plus software and DentalHealth app, which are not yet available in the United States.

“With the launch of these 3 products, 3Shape will redefine scan quality, redefine diagnostics, and redefine patient communication,” he shared.

First up? Sporting a brand-new arctic sapphire metallic look with the same familiar ergonomics and wireless capability that TRIOS users are accustomed to, the new TRIOS 6 features a visual upgrade that includes a redesigned button layout based on customer feedback. Compact and lightweight, the scanner is calibration-free, weighs just 10.8 oz, and measures 10.47 inches in length.

110% Higher Scan Resolution

TRIOS 6 captures lifelike HD scans with up to 110% higher scan resolution, resulting in a greater level of detail for any workflow. Additionally, TRIOS 6 leverages 3Shape's patented ScanAssist technology, which uses intelligent alignment. The scanner also includes a helpful haptic feedback feature that guides users as they scan.

“TRIOS 6 offers HD mode scanning,” Fisker shared, “so it captures a greater level of detail and builds a higher level of accuracy —both of which benefit patient and lab communications.”

Going Beyond Digital Impressions

Except there’s more: TRIOS 6 takes innovation a step further, offering a scanner equipped with the world’s first-ever hyperspectral imaging technology, which simultaneously captures data from 3 light sources—white, fluorescent, and near-infrared—then fuses the data together into one image.

This effectively opens up a window beyond just the surface of the tooth.

“TRIOS 6 is the first scanner in the world to offer this,” Fisker shared. “I believe TRIOS 6 may be the biggest innovation in 3Shape’s history because it has evolved from a digital impression system into more of a diagnostic aid. It redefines how clinicians practice dentistry.”

Redefining Diagnostics

Practices can build on the capabilities of the TRIOS 6 with the TRIOS Dx Plus software, which offers AI-powered diagnostics that inspect, detect, and compare a range of patient oral health conditions on the intraoral scan data.

Clinicians can identify miniscule changes for each of the conditions—surface and proximal caries,† tooth wear, gingival recession, and plaque—over time , with automatic and immediate documentation. TRIOS Dx Plus also provides the suggested severity of each pathology’s progression.

With TRIOS Dx Plus, clinicians can share data about oral conditions with their patients, increasing their trust in the diagnosis while boosting acceptance.

“The ability for patients to actually see their own teeth and compare tooth wear, plaque, and gum recession over time can be a very relatable and powerful patient education tool,” Fisker said.

Redefining Communication

Imagine sending patients home with more than just a paper printout—something they won’t forget in a drawer. Now, it’s possible. Complementing both TRIOS 6 and TRIOS Dx Plus is 3Shape’s DentalHealth mobile app, which ushers in a new level of communication and raises the bar for patient education.

The app offers patients access to all scan data along with an overview of their individual health situation, empowering them to participate in their dental health by evaluating their oral conditions from the comfort of their own homes.

Additionally, the app allows patients to track how their oral health has changed over time and offers personalized and actionable tips that they can use to manage their dental health.

“Patients can see everything on their phone that they just saw while in the dental office, no matter where they are,” Fisker explained. “Seeing is believing! In fact, in a recent survey, we found that 81% of patients believe that this app will increase the frequency with which they visit the dentist.”

Meeting the Need

Ultimately, Fisker believes the key to developing successful tools and technology begins with examining the needs of clinicians.

“It’s about talking to customers, finding opportunities within their pain points, and always trying to innovate," he said. "We have a vision of where the future is going. 3Shape was never born to be No. 2, so we have the internal motivation to develop the next solutions."
