After a year of working with two all-ceramic, BPA-free restoratives, a dentist reflects on how they've positively impacted her patient care

LAUREN YASUDA RAINEY, DDS

Dr. Rainey has been a clinical dentist for more than a decade, and in that time, she has owned and operated her own fee-for-service private practice in Berkeley, CA. She was also part of the faculty at her alma mater, the Dugoni School in the Department of Reconstructive Dental Sciences and the Department of Dental Practice. She is currently on the education team at Bioclear Matrix Systems, teaching injection molded composite techniques to dentists in the U.S. and Canada, and she is a member of the speaker’s bureau at Catapult Education. Dr. Rainey is an advocate for women in leadership and has dedicated much of her career to mentoring young women aspiring to healthcare careers.

In today's health-conscious society, more and more patients are carefully considering the materials being placed in their mouths. That's one reason why Dr. Lauren Yasuda Rainey confidently turns to VOCO’s Admira Fusion family. Skipping the classic monomers traditionally found in composites, these all-ceramic materials leverage Organically Modified Ceramic (ORMOCER) technology. Here, Dr. Rainey discusses why that matters, and how Admira Fusion and Admira Fusion x-tra give her peace of mind when creating esthetic restorations.

I recently saw an emergency patient who broke a cusp off her maxillary premolar, a tooth that was previously treated with an amalgam filling. She confided that she had severe dental anxiety, and for the last 40 years, had received only emergency care. She lost approximately 5 mm of cusp and the tooth sheared well above the gumline—making it a perfect case to use Admira Fusion x-tra, a single-shade, bulk-fill restorative.

I was able to save the tooth with a direct composite restoration in a single visit, and the patient was thrilled. When I saw her again the following week, she shared that her tooth felt smooth and was holding up well. Given her previous negative experiences in other dental offices, the fact that she came back to see me spoke volumes.

Strong, Safe, and Sculptable

I have been using both Admira Fusion and Admira Fusion x-tra for about a year now, and I’ve had minimal concerns about the durability and longevity of the restorations. Thanks to VOCO’s Pure Silicate Technology—which replaces the traditional composite filler and resin matrix with silicon oxide— the materials are all-ceramic, which leads to stronger, esthetic restorations that maintain nice polishability.

Additionally, VOCO’s Nano-ORMOCER technology assures the composites are 100% BPA-free with less polymerization shrinkage and shrinkage stress. In terms of handling, both Admira Fusion and Admira Fusion x-tra are highly workable. They're soft enough to be moldable but not so soft that they slump after placement. I also heat my composites, which further adds to their sculptability.

Precise Shade-Matching

Admira Fusion stands out for its fidelity to the VITA shade guide, ensuring that the end result is consistent with my expectations. Admira Fusion x-tra, available in a single shade, streamlines my armamentarium by reducing the need for multiple composites. It also boasts a higher value compared to other bulk-fill products I've used, which gives the tooth a more youthful and less worn appearance.

These restorations appear clear on X-rays thanks to the radiopacity of the Nano-ORMOCER technology. I can confidently show my patients on their postop radiographs and photographs what a solid restoration we've been able to provide with Admira Fusion.
