When searching for a bonding agent that’s effective, reliable, and easy to use, it can seem like many products fit the bill. So, where should you start? For Gary Radz, DDS, the answer is simple: The best products stick to the science. That’s why he has relied on VOCO’s Futurabond U dual curing universal adhesive since it came to market over a decade ago. Not only does the material meet VOCO’s exceptionally high quality standards, but it also delivers consistent, reliable results in virtually any restorative scenario. Here, Dr. Radz shares several more reasons Futurabond U remains a top choice in his practice.

One of the great things about VOCO is the solid science behind their chemistry. Their products perform exactly as promised, without any issues. And if you ever have questions about product performance or clinical data, they have all the information you need readily available. I’m always confident using any VOCO product. It's kind of like buying a Mercedes—you don't need to testdrive it, you just know it's going to work.

The Right Chemistry at the Right Time

For me, the predictability that Futurabond U provides is what makes it a good, solid adhesive choice. I used the first-generation Futurabond prior to using Futurabond U, and the beauty of this newer product is that we no longer need to inventory different types of bonding agents for different types of clinical needs. You can use it in any clinical scenario with confidence—whether you're doing self, total, or selective etching.

Another great feature of Futurabond U is its patented SingleDose delivery. Designed like a blister pack, it’s a 2chamber system where you press down and release the liquid from 1 chamber into the other, effectively mixing the 2 products—self-etch bonding agent and dual cure activator—together just before use. This ensures that the more volatile components of the bonding agent remain separate until the time of use, preserving their effectiveness. Mixing takes just a couple of seconds, so it doesn’t add time to the procedure. Instead, it instills confidence that you’re applying the right chemistry at the right time for optimal results. It’s pretty ingenious.

The other nice thing about the material is that it can be used with different types of restoratives—not just composites, but also in combination with the cementation process for lithium disilicate, zirconia, even traditional porcelain-fused-to-metal and all-metal restorations. It's very versatile. It’s a fairly simple product, which makes it very easy to use, but it also does what it's supposed to do.

Durability into the Future

The tough part about bonding agents is you need time to evaluate their effectiveness. You can place the composite and say, “Oh, that looks really nice,” but there’s really no way of knowing whether it will stand the test of time. Now that I’ve used Futurabond U for over a decade, we haven't had any clinical issues that we can look back on and say, “Okay, that's a bonding agent problem.” We just haven't seen that.
