In his Fountain Valley, CA, practice, Dr. Robert Mokbel spends little time shade matching—thanks to his reliance on Tokuyama’s OMNICHROMA family of restoratives for durable, esthetic results. Here, Dr. Mokbel, who was a clinical assistant professor at the USC School of Dentistry for more than 35 years, explains why he made the switch to OMNICHROMA, and why he’s stayed with it ever since.

My No. 1 reason for bringing OMNICHROMA into my workflow when it was first introduced was the color matching. Even from the very beginning, I was confident the material would give me great results. Now, when I’m restoring single teeth, I’ve almost moved away entirely from checking the patient shade before restoring because I know I’ll be able to match the existing tooth color.

Time-Savings Benefits

Another benefit of the OMNICHROMA system has to do with time. I’ve always had an issue with patients who complain about the time it takes to complete their restorations using traditional composite materials. But with OMNICHROMA, I get the “wow” result, a great match, and all in much less time.

I reach for OMNICHROMA for most of my anterior and posterior restorations because I prefer incremental placement of the material rather than bulk placement. I use OMNICHROMA Flow or OMNICHROMA Flow BULK for small occlusal and facial caries. I tell my colleagues it’s just a superior material—the handling is excellent, polishing is easy and quick, and I’ve seen great wear resistance. My restorations maintain their shine with minimal staining.

Case in Point

An 80-year-old patient on an emergency appointment had a very noticeable broken composite filling on tooth No. 8 and wanted a quick fi x.

Since the cavity extended to the palatal surface and required a material that could block the dark shadows while at the same time mimic the tooth color, I knew a restoration like this could be time-consuming with multiple steps and shade matching. It was an emergency situation in a busy office, and I trusted OMNICHROMA to bail me out.

I placed a 1-mm bevel on the facial of the tooth to pick up the color of the underlying tooth, then proceeded with the bonding restoration using OMNICHROMA BLOCKER and layering OMNICHROMA on top. The material adapted very nicely to the surface of the tooth. The polishing took no time due to the uniform nano filler particles, and it took less than 15 minutes to provide the patient with an unbelievable restoration. And the patient was thrilled.
