BETH DAMAS, DDS, MS

Dr. Damas graduated from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry as 1 of only 5 students earning a dual DDS and MS degree. She began private practice in general dentistry from 2005 to 2008 in the Chicago suburbs, and then entered the endodontic residency program at the University of Detroit Mercy in Michigan, completing her residency training in 2010. Dr. Damas is an active member of the American Association of Endodontists, the American Dental Association, and the Chicago Dental Society. She completed her American Board of Endodontics Diplomate certifi cation in 2015. She practices at Southwest Endodontics in Geneva and Orland Park, IL.

A recent addition to the U.S. dental market—yet researched, perfected, and used for years by European clinicians—the Reciproc Blue file system simplifies root canal treatments with just one reciprocating instrument that effortlessly navigates complex canals and offers superior cutting efficiency. Here, Dr. Beth Damas shares how Reciproc Blue has eliminated the guesswork from her endo workflow, providing her with a flexible file system that resists cyclic fatigue and allows her to dramatically reduce treatment time.

We all know that incorporating anything new into our offices can be stressful. But I’ve found that finding ways to simplify my armamentarium can reduce that stress and allow me to focus my efforts on the procedure itself. This is especially true in the complex treatment protocols we see every day in endodontics.

Dentsply Sirona’s Reciproc Blue is a reciprocating endodontic treatment solution that allows me to prepare root canals with only 1 instrument. In my opinion, utilizing this simplified 1-file system helps take the guesswork out of the equation and conceptually streamlines the efficiency of the endodontic protocol both functionally and financially.

With Reciproc Blue, a single file is doing the job of the multiple files found in other systems. The time I save by using 1 file as an orifice shaper, glide path, and finishing file simplifies my workflow as I’m no longer taking the time to switch out files along the way.

The Beauty of Reciprocating Files

Especially for clinicians who’ve recently incorporated more endodontic procedures into their practice, reciprocating file systems are an excellent place to begin. The 150º cutting motion, followed by the 30º release to advance the file, is a built-in safety factor to reduce the overall likelihood of instrumentation fracture. The reciprocating movement of the file allows it to stay centered in the canal system.

The proprietary heat treatment pro-motes cutting ability as well as flexibility around curvatures in complex anatomies. I know this system can handle complex anatomy without succumbing to cyclic fatigue. Additionally, the S-shaped cross section of the fi le maintains high cutting efficiency and—with a single file—provides me with an instrument that can handle the majority of root canal treatments that arrive at my practice.

More Efficient Retreatments

I see the greatest benefit when incorporating this system into my retreatment protocols because I am no longer flipping back and forth between multiple fi le systems for the same tooth. For me, it’s eliminated the guesswork. I’m less frustrated. My assistant is less frustrated. My patients often leave my office saying the retreatment procedure actually took less time than the original root canal. I will take that as a win!
