Why I Use: Traverse Chair

Keeping patients comfortable and at ease during treatment is a no-brainer. But making sure the dental team is working under equal ergonomics can be a challenge, especially when it comes to operatories in tight spaces. That was the case for Dr. Matt Nejad, until he introduced the Traverse Chair, from Engle Dental, into his Beverly Hills, CA, practice. Here, he explains how the dental chair’s unique hydraulic movement maximizes limited operatory space and makes the entire dental team more efficient.

from_the_podium-teeth.jpgAbout 3 years ago we decided to remodel our operatories, which included upgrading our dental chairs. My partners and I quickly realized that in order for the dental team to have enough working space, patients would be getting into the chair with their feet almost touching the front walls of the operatory. I’d heard great things about the Traverse Chair being really comfortable and affordable, but it ended up solving our functional problems, as well.

A Space-Saving Design
The Traverse Chair has an impressive range of motion between 12 and 6 o’clock that lets everyone in the room get into a comfortable working position. It’s a great way to maximize our limited space and make the entire dental team more efficient.

We program the chair so that the seat scoots forward as the back of the chair reclines, so patients’ feet come within a few inches of the wall and it’s much more comfortable for them to get in and out of the chair. I have some athlete patients who are extremely tall, around 6 feet 8 inches, and using the Traverse Chair means that both the patient and I can get into a comfortable position during treatment.

The Traverse Chair allows us to utilize a rear delivery system, which gives the operatory a really clean, unintimidating look and feel. When patients walk into the operatory, all they see is the chair with no hanging lights or cords to make it look cluttered or scary. Technically, we’re about 2 or 3 inches short of the ideal length for rear delivery, so the Traverse Chair fills the gap between those few inches.

Pampering the Patient
Practicing in Beverly Hills, the experience we’re trying to sell to our patients is one of quality and luxury. There are only so many touchpoints where you can do this, so having a nice-looking and comfortable chair is crucial to creating that luxurious vibe for patients.

Other dental chairs we looked at had really thin cushions that didn't even look comfortable. But the Traverse Chair has thick cushions that scream comfort just by looking at them. Not every patient goes for it, but having a massage function built into the chair has been so worth it. Just being able to offer it to patients during their appointment is impressive in itself!

In our practice, the Traverse Chair has created the ultimate blend of functionality and esthetics. Not only does it give the operatories a clean and inviting look, but when working in a small space where every inch counts, it guarantees comfort for both me and my patients.
