Under the heading of “You learn something new every day,” I just learned that magnets can be used to hold dentures in place. They don’t require a specific path of insertion, making it easier for people with limited dexterity to insert their dentures.  This is an ideal solution for patients with arthritis, Parkinson’s, those who need a caregiver to insert or remove their prosthesis, and for patients who have difficulty with traditional retention methods. In addition, they don’t require abutment parallelism, soft-tissue undercuts can be engaged, and potentially pathologic lateral or rotating forces are virtually eliminated, protecting the abutment.

PREAT Corporation, which offers the Shiner SR Stress Resistant Magnet System, does offer one caveat: magnets are for retention only; prosthesis stability must be provided by denture base extension, other abutments like stud attachments, or a combination.

You’ll find Shiner SR Magnet System instructions for use here.
