When Dental Product Shopper evaluated VOCO’s Futurabond U adhesive in 2013, our team of dentists awarded it a “Best Product” rating of 4.6. DPS recently checked in with those dentists who originally evaluated the material and learned that many of them still call it their preferred adhesive 3 years later.
Ease of Use, Bond Strength, Handling
What’s important to consider when purchasing a dental adhesive? Our evaluators told us that ease of use, bond strength, and handling are the top 3 features most important to them. The members of our evaluator team found that Futurabond U exceeded their expectations as bond strength came in as the highest-rated criteria with ease of use and handling right behind.
Interestingly, Dr. Artin Manoukian highlighted those exact 3 attributes when DPS talked to him recently. “I especially like its handling, ease of use, and also its reliability in bonding,” Dr. Manoukian noted. “I still use it regularly, and it is my preferred adhesive/bonding agent.”
Three years later, DPS asked the original Futurabond U evaluators if they had experienced any bond failures, and not one reported a failed bond. In 2013, Dr. Cheryl Bingham said Futurabond U had a great bond and was easy to use. Now, she says she is still using it because it is “the best I have used so far” and “I haven’t had any failures.” Dr. Adam Beno agreed, saying, “After 3 years of use, I have not experienced any bonds that have failed (that I recall).”

Universal and Versatile
One main advantage of Futurabond U is it has truly universal properties. VOCO calls it “one adhesive for all your adhesive dentistry” and says it is ideal for self-etch, selective-etch, or total-etch procedures and for all direct or indirect materials. It bonds to light-, dual-, and self-cure resin along with metal, zirconia, aluminum oxide, and silicate ceramic without any extra primer.
“The most important benefit of using Futurabond U is its simplistic versatility,” shared Dr. Cynthia Jetter. “It has the flexibility to be used in a variety of clinical situations.” She continued, “Futurabond U can be used with light-cured materials, self-cure materials, or dual-cured materials. It also bonds to many different surfaces without the need for a primer.” Dr. Paulette Newman agreed and said, “Overall, I thought the product was very nice and compatible with all the different composite material I used.”
Dr. Beno, one of the original evaluators who is still using Futurabond U, noted, “It has many unique features like its unidose delivery, universal properties, and the ability to use it without additional primers.” He said he would definitely recommend the adhesive to colleagues and concluded, “[Futurabond U’s] unidose delivery coupled with its dual-cure and universal application properties make this a great addition to any practice.”
Single Dose Delivery System and No Postoperative Sensitivity
As Dr. Beno mentioned, another unique quality is Futurabond U’s single-dose delivery system, which adds convenience and eliminates potential solvent evaporation, according to VOCO. “The single-dose packs were simple to activate and they ensured consistency of the material, which resulted in consistent bond strength each time the material was used,” reported Dr. Jetter. “Additionally, the single-dose packs took less time to dispense and use than a bottle system. The single-dose system also minimized waste.”
The dentists agreed that Futurabond U’s unique formulation results in virtually no post-operative sensitivity. Dr. Beno said his patients reported no post-op sensitivity, even after using the material for 3 years. “I love the fact that it helps me in reducing post-op sensitivity, or eliminating it completely, for my patients,” shared Dr. Manoukian. Dr. Jetter said, “My patients experienced zero post-op sensitivity with VOCO’s Futurabond U.”
Overall Satisfaction
All but one of the evaluators said they would recommend Futurabond U to colleagues, and most of the dentists said they would purchase it in the future. Now that the future is here, Futurabond U has held up to the test of long-term bonding and is still the preferred adhesive of many dentists.
