Planmeca Viso Evaluation
This CBCT combines exceptional image quality, 4 integrated cameras with low dose radiation, and Planmeca CALM, a unique feature that compensates for patient movement
Dentistry involves so much more than just teeth. During patient exams, dentists often evaluate a patient’s jaw, tongue, airway, and other areas of the head and neck, which sometimes reveals the need for detailed 3D imagery. To obtain those detailed images, and hopefully diagnose a condition and determine the origin of the problem, Planmeca designed the “pinnacle of head and neck imaging,” the Planmeca Viso CBCT.
“In my practice, I’m looking at more than just teeth,” said Drew McDonald, DDS, who says his biggest job is diagnosing the etiology of patients’ malocclusions. “Through imaging, I am able to evaluate my patients’ TMJs, airways, skeletal structures, and alveolar bone phenotypes, which helps me direct my treatment toward addressing the etiology as well as correcting their malocclusion,” he stated.
Planmeca Viso combines premium image quality with high-end usability and is loaded with state-ofthe-art features like Planmeca CALM, ProFace facial photos, and Planmeca Ultra Low Dose imaging. “With Viso, I am able to truly visualize my patients’ true anatomy with low-dose radiation in a single pass of the machine, so I can capture these details on even my youngest patients,” explained Dr. McDonald.
Ease of Use
The Planmeca Viso product family consists of 2 CBCT units - Viso G5 supports volume sizes from 3 x 3 to 20 x 17 cm and Viso G7 can be adjusted freely between 3 x 3 and 30 x 30 cm. Live virtual field-ofview positioning is accessed directly from the control panel via integrated cameras and a live patient view.
“I like Planmeca Viso’s ease of use and functionality, which allows for more comprehensive care in office versus sending the patient somewhere else,” said Dr. Kyle Sullivan. Marty Matz, DDS, said it’s very easy to import and export images for a more advanced implant workflow, and Dr. Rob Thorup said he likes the easy learning curve and robust software capabilities. “Images are fantastic,” and patient positioning is very easy, noted Dr. Jesse Ritter, who suggested, “I wish the ProFace scan would be taken at the same time as the CBCT to ensure a proper stitch of all the files.”

Image Quality & Diagnostic Abilities
The Planmeca CALM movement correction algorithm is ideal for imaging patients who have a difficult time remaining completely still, reducing the need for retakes caused by patient movement. With the ProFace feature, the sensor’s 4 built-in cameras and LED light strips capture detailed 3D facial photos that can be combined with intraoral scans and CBCT images to create a virtual patient. The 25 x 30 cm sensor in the Planmeca Viso G7 can cover the entire maxillofacial area in a single scan without stitching, capturing a single-rotation CBCT scan that is 19 cm high.
Planmeca Viso provides a “crisper image and quicker imaging than older machines and other brands,” noted Dr. Matthew McKnight. Dr. Sullivan said, “The images are high quality. It allows us to get 3D scans to screen for small airways and lets us pull out slices of the TM joint.” Dr. Jared Bloxham called it “amazingly easy to use,” and Dr. Thorup said it’s easy to update the software.
“I enjoy the amount of diagnostic information I can see with the largest FOV and the lowest radiation dose,” shared Dr. McDonald. For planning surgeries, Jim Bates, DDS, MD, said Planmeca Viso provides a large FOV and high-resolution 3D data set that he obtains using ULD, which is available on any resolution setting. “It almost always confirms suspicions that are seen on 2D images and reveals problems not normally seen with 2D images,” reported Dr. Thorup, who said it’s amazing to discover “the problem staring at us in 3D!”
Increase in Overall Practice Efficiency
With Planmeca Viso, Dr. Ritter no longer needs to refer patients elsewhere for a CBCT and obtains scans in house, providing him with an additional revenue stream. “[Being able to] evaluate airways, implant sites and advance diagnostics is a game changer,” he explained. “Viso has allowed me to diagnose patients at a higher level than ever and created a new value for patients,” added Dr. McDonald.
Dr. McKnight called Planmeca Viso a “very versatile, good marketing tool,” and Dr. Matz said the software allows him to access images across his network, which greatly increases his efficiency. Both Dr. Matz and Dr. Kyle Sullivan said they are now able to take airway scans with Planmeca Viso, which allows them to expand their services and treat sleep disorders, something they had not been able to do previously.

“Planmeca Viso is absolutely a musthave for better treatment planning and outcomes,” shared Sarwandeep Bath, DDS. “Without question, this is the highest quality and largest field of view CBCT scanner available,” said Dr. Bates. “It helps with every case I do.”
