Tokuyama Dental's Sofreliner Tough M (Medium) soft denture reline material offers consistent and lasting softness, as well as minimal degradation, superior stain and odor resistance, and exceptional adhesion to the denture base, according to the manufacturer. The silicone-based material has a shore A hardness of 43 and provides patients with up to 2 years of comfort and optimal function. Sofreliner Tough M is suitable for relining upper, lower, partial, or full dentures, providing long-lasting and improved suction. Also available is Sofreliner Tough S (Soft), which lasts up to 1.5 years and has a shore A hardness of 24.
After testing Sofreliner Tough M for this DPS evaluation, our group of general dentists and prosthodontists had high praise for this reline material and ultimately awarded it a Best Product rating. "Sofreliner is tough, yet flexible and comfortable for the patient," said prosthodontist Dr. Eyad Haidar. Another prosthodontist, Dr. Byron Davis, asserted, "I have used silicone liners for 10-plus years and none have held up as well or resisted bacterial leakage under the liner."
Ease of Use
This addition-cured silicone reline material allows dentists to perform an entire chairside reline process in a single mess-free application. Automatic mixing tips save time and minimize waste. According to Dr. Amir Noori E., "The auto-mixing and dispensing make this practical, consistent, and easy to use." Dr. Eric Winterton, who would like clearer instructions for use, said the "automix syringe makes it easy and clean." Calling it easy to dispense and apply, prosthodontist Dr. Brandon Stapleton said he would like to see a better method to recontour the material. "The automix convenience and adequate working time speed up the procedure, allowing it to be scheduled in a 'floating' operatory," explained Dr. Mariano Polack. Noting that most silicone liners are very flimsy and peel off borders quickly, Dr. Davis shared, "I honestly was shocked by how durable and easy the borders were to trim." He also said the application brush "ensures complete coverage of the adhesive."
Patient Satisfaction
Calling Sofreliner Tough M easy to use, Dr. J. Jerald Boseman said this material greatly improved the fit and comfort, and concluded, "So far, it has been durable, maintaining the resiliency essential for patient comfort." He shared a case where relining a lower denture with an atrophic ridge made the denture wearable and more comfortable. Dr. Stapleton said his patients were happy with reline materials that did not have an odor, and Dr. Carrie Niemann noted, "The material is esthetic and patients like the feel." Explaining that she used Sofreliner Tough M to reline a flipper while a patient was healing from surgery, Dr. Niemann discovered, "It filled in the excess space around a canine very nicely with good esthetics."
With strong adhesion and superior tear resistance, Sofreliner Tough M is designed to provide long-lasting relief, with outstanding durability, according to Tokuyama. "I really like how well the liner adheres to the denture base, which makes this a great long-term reline, especially with implant patient healing," noted Dr. Davis. He explained, "Most implant overdenture or fixed implant cases require a long time in denture relines; this product holds up well over time to complete these cases."
Some evaluators shared success stories, including Dr. Polack, who said, "I treated a few immediate dentures with bony undercuts where I would normally avoid a reline, and it increased comfort and retention." Dr. Haidar said Sofreliner Tough M was especially beneficial when treating a patient who had lost roughly 75% of the maxillae, had communication with the sinuses, and had only 1 remaining maxillary tooth secondary to a previous motor vehicle accident. "I fabricated an obturator designed as a 'gasket denture,' which utilizes soft liner as a gasket around the remaining tooth," he said. "The stability of the prosthesis was very satisfactory." When relining a lower denture with an atrophic ridge, Dr. Boseman said, "The adhesion to the denture and density of the material left me feeling as though this material will last much longer than other materials I have used in the past."

All of the evaluators said they would purchase Sofreliner Tough M in the future and would recommend it to their colleagues. "Directions are easy to follow and the result is the finest in-office soft liner I have used," said Dr. Boseman, adding, "I feel like this is now a winning combination." Dr. Haidar said he would start using this product as his preferred soft reline material, and Dr. Davis concluded, "I will be changing from [our current] silicone liner to this product."
