"My dental hygiene chair was always clean, but the surface disinfectant I use builds up over time,” hygienist Pamela Emard told Dental Product Shopper recently. With dark grime ground into the dental chair material, Emard needed a way to efficiently and effectively clean the chairs in her practice without damaging the material. When she had a chance to use Air Techniques’ Monarch Vinyl Upholstery Cleaner for this DPS evaluation, Emard was eager to see if the product really cleaned as well as the manufacturer claimed.

Cleaning Ability

According to Air Techniques, Monarch Vinyl Upholstery Cleaner safely cleans all vinyl and artificial leather and provides a silky gloss finish without leaving any residue. Emard was amazed that the cleaner totally removed stain that was deep into the dental chair material. She added, “This stripped it off and down to the little grooves in the material [and] cleaned it right out.” After cleaning every chair in her office with the cleaner, Emard determined, “I’m so glad I was able to evaluate it. [It is] just what we needed for our clinic.”

Calling the cleaner “great for old chairs that need a little facelift,” Melanie Walker discovered that Monarch Vinyl Upholstery Cleaner brightened up dingy looking chairs and concluded, “It is pretty amazing.” Although she would like to see the quality of the sponges improved, Kim Attanasi said she had a chair that was beginning to discolor, and the product removed residual disinfectant and shined the vinyl upholstery. Linda Franklin said this product turned her dull vinyl into material that looked like new, commenting, “The difference was like night and day.” She added, “We were considering new upholstery, but after using this cleaner we are able to keep the ones we have.” Amy Sherman agreed that the cleaner made chairs look like new and said they now “apply this product to the chairs at the end of every day, to give them a nice shine and appearance.”

Ease of Use

quoteAvailable in a ready-to-use 16.9 oz spray bottle with sponges, Monarch Vinyl Upholstery Cleaner can be used daily. Several hygienists were impressed with how easy it was to work with, including Franklin, who liked the cleaner’s “ease of use and excellent results.” Emard noted, “It’s easy to use [with] superior results.” Donna Grzegorek said she appreciated its convenience and effectiveness, but Angie Reeds felt “it wasn’t convenient on a daily basis because it was an extra step to do.”

Amy Sherman said a little goes a long way with the product, noting that they oversprayed the first few times. Walker shared, “The sponges fall apart a little bit while cleaning, but overall, it seems to be a good product.” Calling it very easy to implement, Lauren Zinn said she preferred to use it at the end of the day, but it would be appropriate to use at any point in the day.

Will Not Harm Fabric or Leave Residue

Made of a blend of special surfactants, silicone compounds, and avocado oil, Monarch Vinyl Upholstery Cleaner cleans and cares for fabric without leaving any residue and helps preserve the material of dental chairs made out of vinyl upholstery, according to the manufacturer. “It cleaned the dirt without harming the chairs,” shared hygienist Jeanette Crofts, who said she would recommend this product because of its conditioning quality and long-lasting effects. Although she said the product sometimes left a slight residue if used too much, Kim Williams said she feels that the cleaner was “safer long-term for the material of the dental chair.” Reeds was looking for a product that removed buildup left from disinfecting products and determined, “[This product] removed the buildup as well as ink marks.”

Sherman especially liked that the cleaner has no smell and appreciated its nongreasy feel. Zinn said the product had a vinegar smell when first applied, but the smell was gone after it was wiped clean. When she used the cleaner on dental chairs with cracked vinyl, Zinn found that it conditioned the vinyl and enhanced the appearance.

Overall Satisfaction

After trying the Monarch Vinyl Upholstery Cleaner for several weeks, Emard and the other evaluators were impressed with its cleaning ability, ease of use, and inability to harm fabric. In fact, Emard said she has already recommended the cleaner to dental hygiene colleagues and will definitely be purchasing the product in the future. “I believe when our patients see the chairs so clean, they won’t have a question about our sterilization practices.” Emard concluded, “[I have] never found a better product for this dirty job. It is GREAT…no bologna!”
