Dentist. Mom. Dancer. Doing even one of these things can be utterly backbreaking, yet Lisel Balk, DMD, somehow manages to do all three. Fortunately, she has a little help from her ErgoPrism loupes, which allow her to practice dentistry with an upright, relaxed, and neutral posture. Here, she shares how this innovative and ergonomic loupe from LumaDent has saved her neck and back and allowed her to deliver faster, better, and more enjoyable dentistry to her patients.

Being an active parent at home is not easy when you’ve worked on patients all day long and your neck and back are in pain. One kid wants to be picked up, the other one wants to be thrown, and then someone asks you to build a fort with them…it’s exhausting! I’m also a Zumba instructor and love to dance, which means I need to pay attention to my posture. So, it’s nice to have a product like ErgoPrism loupes that can help salvage what body I have left at the end of the day.

I was inspired to try ErgoPrism loupes because a couple of the hygienists in my practice started using them for hygiene. I’d been using traditional loupes for the past 13 years, so while switching to a loupe where you stare straight ahead was a big change, it was no different from adjusting to any other new product. I used them for the first time and thought, “Okay, this is weird,” but then the next day it all clicked and I realized it felt great not to be hunched over all day long.

Work Faster, Not Harder

ErgoPrism loupes help me work faster because I’m not bending my neck all over to try and see what I need to see. It literally feels like staring straight ahead at a TV or screen and doing what you need to do vs just diving in there and being all over the place on top of the patient. It's so much easier this way.

What I love most about ErgoPrism loupes is that I'm not achy at the end of the day. I do a lot of cosmetic dentistry and resin veneers, so my procedures are very, very long—sometimes 4, 5, even 9 hours staring at the same teeth. It takes a lot of time because I’m doing the lab work inside the patient’s mouth and it’s very detail oriented. I’m adding all the tints, dyes, colors, and opaquers, and then shaping. It’s intense, and it’s not fun when you’re uncomfortable and hunched over in the same place for hours on end. It's great not to have back and neck strain while doing so. I would definitely say that ErgoPrism loupes are really impactful for longer procedures.

I was a little nervous to take measurements for the loupes myself, but it was so easy. I measured my working length, which changes when you use ErgoPrism loupes because your neck isn’t bent, and then I sent LumaDent a few pictures of myself taking the measurements to make sure I was doing it correctly. It was actually nice not needing to take time out of my busy schedule to go and get fitted.

Practice with a Smile

While in dental school, I remember one professor who used to say, “Ergonomics, ergonomics—you'll thank me later.” I think my professor meant that it's physically challenging to stay still and have your neck hunched over all day, and to do it all with a smile on your face. I’m excited to have a loupe that keeps me smiling and
