Versatile systems consistently create tight anatomically accurate contacts—taking the stress out of challenging Class II restorations

No dentist wants to redo a restoration. But open or improperly shaped contacts can lead to a host of issues—including fractures, food traps, and recurrent caries. Here, Dr. Chris Campbell shares why he relies on Dentsply Sirona’s Palodent Matrix Systems to achieve tight contacts in virtually every clinical scenario.

Remember the days when the only choice to fill a cavity was amalgam? One often overlooked advantage of amalgam is that it’s easy to manipulate and highly condensable. Today’s tooth-colored composite materials are not, which means the contact creation required for Class II restorations can be extra challenging. I use Dentsply Sirona’s Palodent Plus Sectional Matrix System predictably for roughly 95% of my Class II restorations.

It is so critical that the contact point is where it would be on a natural tooth (below the marginal ridge), and not in a spot that may interfere with the occlusion. We also want to make sure the matrix extends subgingivally below the box. This allows the Palodent wedge system to go into place for a tight seal on the gingival box.

I’ve also used the Palodent 360 Circumferential Matrix System when a large amount of tooth structure is missing and I need to do a larger restoration, such as a core buildup in preparation for a crown.

Contoured Design for an Effective Seal

Both systems use matrix bands that are anatomically contoured right out of the box. The shape of the matrix band, as well as the wedge system with its 3 different sizes, allows me to get tight marginal adaptation at the box for an effective seal as well as an anatomically shaped interproximal contact.

The Palodent systems are not bulky in the mouth, and I never worry about pinching my patient’s cheek when tightening the band, as can happen with a traditional Tofflemire. In my experience, the concave wedge system prevents the papilla from being im-pinged upon—another big factor for patient comfort. Palodent works well in virtually every clinical situation. Very rarely do I need to reach for any other system.
