MELONIE MACDONALD, BSC, DDS

Dr. MacDonald’s journey in dentistry spans over 3 decades, beginning as a dental assistant. She graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1989 and subsequently earned a BSc in 1998 and a DDS in 2000 from the University of Alberta. After nearly 2 decades of clinical experience as an associate dentist, she established a fully digital practice in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, just over 4 years ago. She offers a wide variety of treatments in her practice, including pedodontics, endodontics, prosthetic dentistry, smile design, and injectable esthetic treatments. She has been providing clear aligner treatment since 2003. She also loves sharing her enthusiasm for CEREC and digital dentistry both with colleagues and patients. A key opinion leader for Dentsply Sirona, she enjoys empowering women in dentistry.

Despite the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Melonie MacDonald founded Citadel Dental in 2020 knowing one thing for certain: Technology would be at the heart of her daily practice.

“I started with a simple digital intraoral scanner, and within months, I transitioned to the Primescan AC and full CEREC system,” she said. “My team and I quickly realized how powerful it was to show patients their scans to facilitate patient education, codiscovery, and treatment acceptance.”

From there, they began scanning every new patient during initial examinations, along with existing patients during yearly recall appointments. And as patient demand surged, Dr. MacDonald’s practice quickly outgrew its original 4-operatory footprint and eventually expanded to 9 operatories.

“By that time, we were in desperate need of an additional scanner,” she recalled, “so when Dentsply Sirona asked if I was interested in beta testing Primescan 2, I happily agreed! Having already utilized the DS Core cloud platform for a couple of years, I felt confident about smoothly integrating this scanner into our practice workflow.”

Save Time with a Single Scan

The first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution, Primescan 2 allows users to capture high-quality patient scans from any connected device. It’s powered by DS Core, which promotes seamless patient communication and collaboration with other dentists, specialists, and lab partners—plus easy access to scan data anywhere, anytime.

“We love how effortless it is scanning directly into DS Core. All of our workhorse software lives in the cloud, and having all these massive digital fi les stored in one place is incredible,” said Dr. MacDonald, who also appreciates that DS Core software updates are shared with her team automatically.

“With Primescan 2, we save time and maximize efficiency by leveraging a patient’s initial status scan in multiple ways—whether submitting an orthodontic case through SureSmile, milling a restoration with Primemill, 3D-printing a custom night guard using Primeprint, or sending a case to a commercial lab,” she shared. “Plus, the scan becomes a permanent patient record that’s securely stored on the DS Core platform.”

Smooth Workflow, Happy Patients

Once the scan is complete, Primescan 2 can be moved to the next patient while Dr. MacDonald does treatment planning, initiates lab orders, or accesses manufacturing workflows on a separate workstation.

“Today’s patients are savvier than ever—they can find out what exists in the world of dentistry with a quick Google search,” she explained. “Because of that, they are very grateful for technology like Primescan 2 and DS Core, which helps them better understand their oral health conditions and ultimately elevates the standard of care.”
