These hygiene instruments from Henry Schein are lightweight and ergonomic, with sharp, long-lasting tips that make calculus removal quick and easy
When Lisa Juliana, PHDHP, RDH, first used the ACCLEAN curettes and scalers from Henry Schein, she decided to put them to the test on tenacious calculus, seeing how they would fare on a patient who was overdue for a cleaning.
“The curette and scaler removed even tenacious calculus quickly, and without needing repeated scaling strokes,” she said. “The cutting edges seemed to be super sharp. By removing the deposits easily, this saved me time and energy. Some scalers that I used in the past did not remove deposits as easily, even when they were designed similarly as the instruments from the ACCLEAN family.”
Optimal Ergonomics and Performance
The ACCLEAN curettes and scalers were developed in collaboration with hygienists, with the goal of creating instruments that are easy and comfortable to use and that elevate the overall user experience. The well-balanced instruments feature a lightweight, ergonomic design, which helps keep hand fatigue at bay.
Additionally, the tips are designed to keep a sharp edge, allowing for precise and effective treatment. Their advanced micro-structure provides a long-lasting performance, and the instruments’ uncoated design allows for resharpening and extended use.
With double-ended lightweight construction, these instruments are designed to help reduce hand fatigue while providing enhanced tactile sensitivity. The curettes and scalers also offer a smooth grip, with an etch design that keeps the user’s hand in place, while the grip rings prevent the instrument from slipping.
Focus On Patient Care vs Hand Fatigue
Over the course of her 11-year dental hygiene career, Tessa Simpson, RDH, has also found great success using the ACCLEAN curettes and scalers. “The scalers are very comfortable to use,” she said. “They are lightweight instruments with a larger handle, which allows the dental clinician to use a lighter grasp while working.”
Simpson continued appreciating the instruments’ sharp cutting edge that helps reduce hand fatigue. She said that because she is more comfortable while working, she is able to offer even better care to her patients.
During a recent DPS product review—where the ACCLEAN family of hygiene hand instruments earned a DPS Best Product award—each evaluator chose 1 curette and 1 scaler to evaluate from among the product line, which includes 25 double-ended curettes and 18 double-ended scalers.
Choosing to try 2 instruments she's never used from the ACCLEAN product line, Simpson was impressed with her curette's longer shank. She also liked that it allowed her to access deeper periodontal pockets. Meanwhile, the scaler she evaluated had a sickle on one end and a rounded spoon on the other, and she found it worked especially well in furcation entrances and on lower anteriors.
“With instruments that provide a larger handle, are lightweight, and provide a sharp cutting edge, I am able to focus on providing clinical care rather than worrying about my hand being fatigued or hurting,” she said.
A Better Experience on Both Sides of the Chair
Juliana echoed these comments, saying that she likes the instruments’ handles and that they have a comfortable design and size. Plus, since the ACCLEAN curettes and scalers are so effective at removing calculus, Juliana finds that patients spend less time in the chair—a huge benefit for both the patient and the clinician. Patients also experience less scaling pressure, which keeps them more comfortable.
“I would encourage other hygienists to try these scalers and curettes to save themselves and their patients time and comfort,” Juliana said. “They were very effective at removal of deposits.”
A Great Addition for Hygiene Care
Both hygienists agree the ACCLEAN curettes and scalers are a great addition to their cassettes, as the ergonomic, durable instruments make scaling even heavy calculus easier. “I’m very happy with the design, deposit removal, and tactile sense,” Juliana concluded.
