Introduction
There have been many generations of dental bonding systems. An article by Kugel and Ferrari reviewed the various generations of adhesive systems in 2000. In their article the authors describe six generations of adhesives. Since then at least one more generation of bonding systems has been introduced. Using the Kugel and Ferrari article as the basis for discussion this article reviews the current status of the generations of dentin bonding systems and reports on a new dentin-enamel bonding system that represents a distinctly different approach from the direction taken recently by manufacturers.
