Emphasizing seamless connectivity, faster workflows, and smarter integrations, Dentsply Sirona’s Primescan 2 intraoral scanner took centerstage at IDS 2025. Introduced last year, the first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution has already evolved significantly with multiple enhancements unveiled at the show in Cologne, Germany.

Enhancements include:

- Integrated Caries Detection1: Featuring advanced near-infrared and fluorescence technologies, Primescan 2 will be able to be used to complement conventional methods of effectively identifying and successfully treating caries, and helping patients better understand their treatment needs via DS Core.

- Optimized Smart Compression2: Cutting bandwidth requirements by up to 50%3 and making Primescan 2 more accessible

without additional infrastructure and therefore simplifying installation procedures.

- Faster SureSmile Simulations: The automatic initiation of tooth segmentation and smile simulation right after taking a Primescan 2 treatment scan reduces calculation times by up to 90%4, allowing for a more efficient patient consultation.

Dentsply Sirona also introduced new accessories for Primescan 2, arriving in the weeks ahead and designed to improve both the scanning experience and patient engagement: The Primescan 2 Cart features a slim, ergonomic design for smooth mobility and a smart display for effortless patient communication, allowing dental professionals to tailor the scanner solution to their specific needs. And the Multi-Use Steel Sleeve enables durability, sustainability, and optimal hygiene for long-term use, with high-level disinfection (HLD) capabilities for enhanced patient safety.

Cloud-Driven Innovation

Primescan 2’s latest advancements further enhance its future-ready capabilities with new cloud-driven applications, enabling real-time collaboration, automated workflows, and improved scanning experience. As Primescan 2 is powered by DS Core, the cloud platform ensures instant updates for greater efficiency and performance. These enhancements bring increased speed, precision, and ease of use—reinforcing Dentsply Sirona’s commitment to simple, connected dentistry.

We caught up with Dentsply Sirona's Bruce Peatey, Group Vice President, Americas RCO,during IDS to discuss the latest innovations.

Do you view Primescan 2 and DS Core as opening up a new chapter in dentistry?

Modern dentistry, up until 1985, was fairly analog in its approach. And CEREC, which turns 40 years old this year, was really the starting point of digital dentistry, and what's happened since then—you just have to walk around IDS and see—is a proliferation of digital options for the dental professional. And it is just gotten to be too much, so it is time to bring it all back together. And we really believe this is the next era of dentistry—connected dentistry. When you think of Primescan 2, that's the first time we have a device that shows the potential of a cloud-enabled device, and DS Core is where you bring all your devices and workflows together—it’s amazing.

We’re really happy with Primescan 2 and excited about the launches we’ve introduced at IDS, such as the caries detection that is now integrated with the device, and the SureSmile simulator. The simulation time has gone from minutes to seconds—a 90% reduction in time, which is really important when you have the patient in the chair.

And the one that we are most excited about is improving the compression on Primescan 2, which is linked to the upload speed from the device into the cloud. That requirement at launch was 50 megabits per second, but now it's 25. So what that does is lower that barrier for areas with slower internet connections and makes it more accessible without additional infrastructure.

So this will now cover a much larger part of the population?

Yes, particularly in the U.S. And the beauty of a cloud-enabled device is that we haven't stopped. We're going to keep going so there will only be less of a requirement for the upload speed. And that's something that really makes a difference. We’ve made 85 updates since we launched DS Core. In comparison, CEREC software is 22 months between versions. So, as all the feedback that comes in, with people saying ‘I wish you did this. I wanted to do that.’ It was almost 2 years that you’d have to wait and if you didn't get it in that round, it'd be the next round. We are now doing updates every 3 months.

Is it similar to your phone where it automatically updates the software so you don’t have to worry about it anymore?

All that is needed is a website—you’re connected to the internet, so it doesn’t matter what device it is. This sort of independence from hardware, that’s where connected dentistry really goes, so that you think about the other devices in our network less and less. As we move through DS Core, the intent is to have them all there and that way dentists don't have to have I.T. departments and all the outliers, and even storage is covered as part of it. We've got Google Cloud driving it, and it's that vast computing power that is the real secret sauce. The work is not done in the device anymore. The work is done in the cloud. So it's much more than a wireless scanner, but that was a great place to start.

Clinical education is always a focus for Dentsply Sirona. How has your education and training evolved?

We have one of the most comprehensive clinical education programs in the industry. Here are some fun facts: We operate 57 education centers in 35 countries around the world and we are increasing the number of courses and curriculum. Just last year we had over 220,000 dentists that we trained through the course of a year. And that's over 11,643 courses in 155 countries. We're really proud of our dedication to education. And we are doing more in the digital academy space, but still over 80% of the training we do is hands-on, face-to-face because, after all, it’s a craftsman's profession. We’re providing dental professionals and students with the up-to-date knowledge and skills they need to advance themselves and their practices.
