HyFlex EDM file system offers superior fracture resistance and flexibility for predictable preparation of the root canal and a more efficient endo workflow
Under most circumstances, surprises can be fun. That is not the case in dentistry, where surprises tend to center on unexpected complications in treatment—or in the case of root canal therapy—unforeseen variations in root structure or hidden canals. While dentists can’t prevent unanticipated conditions from happening, they can stock their operatories with reliable, well-performing instruments and equipment that can minimize these oral health surprises, promote predictability, and ensure successful patient outcomes. In the fast-paced environment that spells most root canal treatments, many dentists rely on Coltene’s HyFlex EDM file system to take that stress level down a significant notch—and perform well every time.
“The HyFlex system is fabricated using EDM (electrical discharge machining) technology, and it offers superior fracture resistance compared to traditional NiTi files,” said Neil Parikh, DDS, who is the Dental Director at Friend Family Health Center in Chicago, IL, a network of community health centers serving medically underserved populations.
High Fracture Resistance
Its fifth generation of nickel-titanium (NiTi files), Coltene’s HyFlex EDM file system offers up to 700% greater fracture resistance when compared to traditional NiTi files, a distinction that is largely the result of EDM technology’s use of spark erosion to harden the surface of the file. This brings a reduced risk of file separation, as well as unmatched strength, flexibility, and improved cutting efficiency for even the most complex canals.
Use Fewer Files
Packaged as a modular system of sterile instruments, the HyFlex EDM file system includes OneFile, designed to increase the number of cases that can be prepared with just 1 or 2 HyFlex EDM files. In addition to OneFile, the system includes the Shaping, Glidepath, Orifice Opener, and Finishing files.
Strength And Flexibility
While it may seem like an oxymoron for an instrument to be both strong and flexible, Hyflex EDM covers both those bases, which means clinicians will need fewer files for their procedures. HyFlex EDM includes controlled memory properties that allow the system to carefully follow the anatomy of the canal. The result? The risk of ledging, transportation, and perforation is significantly reduced. Additionally, the built-in shape memory prevents stress during canal preparation by changing its spiral shape.
“I’ve been using the HyFlex EDM files from Coltene for many years now,” Dr. Parikh shared. “They just squeeze into canals and clean them out without separating or breaking in the canal.”
Greater Cost Efficiency
While similar files on the market need to be discarded after each use due to degradation, the HyFlex EDM files maintain their strength and can be used for multiple procedures. They are easily returned to their original shape and fatigue resistance with a regular autoclave process.
“We’ve never had any issues!” Dr. Parikh shared. “This file system takes the stress out of working with small canals.”
