Time-Saving Tools for Infection Prevention

Dentsply Sirona Preventive products increase practice efficiency while helping to reduce the risk of cross-contamination for dental staff and patients

As clinicians, you’re aware of the need to stay up-to-date with technology and best practices. But with all the hype about using digital tools to improve your practice, it’s important not to lose sight of the basics, especially when it comes to infection control.

Are you keeping patients safe from contaminants? Are you using products that may be harboring dangerous buildup, even after cleaning?

Drs. Thomas Stoddard and John Turner, who practice general dentistry together in Greenwood, SC, switched to Dentsply Sirona Preventive’s family of infection prevention products earlier this year because they wanted to keep their operatories clean and offer a safer environment for staff and patients alike.

“The change to using these products came from trying to stay on the cutting edge of the most effective products for the safety of our patients,” shared Dr. Turner, adding that the masks, handpieces, disinfecting wipes, and disposable tips have not only created a safer treatment environment for patients, they've also saved time and resources.

NuPro Freedom Cordless Prophy HandpieceThe Nupro Freedom Cordless Prophy System has a built-in fluid seal in the outer sheath that isolates the inner module from contact with blood or saliva. This lightweight but powerful handpiece also cuts down on time-consuming sterilizing practices. “Nupro Freedom has helped us overcome the challenges of oiling and maintaining air-driven handpiece systems,” said Dr. Stoddard. It’s also been a staff crowd-pleaser. “All of the hygienists think it is fabulous—it’s easy to use, easier to adapt in the mouth, and there are no cords or pedals,” said Dr. Turner. The hygienists in the office also suffer from less wrist and arm fatigue, and can angle the prophy cup to suit their needs, Dr. Stoddard noted.

VoloWipes for infection prevention Dr. Stoddard appreciates VoloWipes' short kill time for tuberculosis and other pathogens exposed during dental procedures. Nearly 19% larger than standard wipes, they act as a disinfectant, cleaner, and deodorizer to clean operatory surfaces faster. “VoloWipes disinfects in 2 minutes, as opposed to waiting longer for other products,” said Dr. Turner.

Available in all 3 levels of ASTM protection, Com-Fit Plush Natural Fit Masks have soft ear loops, a curved noseband, and elastic chin strip that’s designed to conform to wearers’ natural face structure. Dr. Turner said the masks provide a tight but comfortable fit, and Dr. Stoddard said he feels confident about the infection resistance they provide to his staff.flash-tips

Metal syringe tips can harbor buildup from exposure to blood, saliva, and dental materials. But FlashTips are a fast, disposable alternative. “FlashTips are quicker to change out than some other tips we have used,” said Dr. Turner, adding that the staff also appreciates their bright and lively colors. “The FlashTips save time because there’s no sterilization requirements, as with metal tips,” added Dr. Stoddard.
