CHUCK RUBIN, DMD

Dr. Rubin completed his undergraduate education at the University of Manitoba and graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry in 1990 with the University Gold Medal and numerous other awards for periodontics, oral diagnosis, dental radiology, operative dentistry, oral medicine, nutrition and metabolism, pediatric dentistry, and anatomy. He has practiced at Transcona Dental Centre in Winnipeg, MB, since 1994. He is also a member of the Winnipeg Dental Society, Manitoba Dental Association, and Canadian Dental Association. Dr. Rubin spends countless hours ensuring that he is up to date on all advancements in dental technology and procedures to provide the most current and proven treatment options to his patients. He is also a DPS evaluator.

After many years of using the same bonding agent in his Winnipeg, MB, dental practice, Dr. Chuck Rubin was reluctant to make a switch. But after only a couple weeks of using Prime&Bond active by Dentsply Sirona, he decided to make this universal adhesive his office’s sole bonding solution. Now, 6 months later, he shares some of the reasons why he hasn’t looked back. Spoiler alert—it’s all about Prime&Bond active’s ease of use, low film thickness, ability to bond predictably in the presence of moisture, and relaxed working time. Here, Dr. Rubin explains how he successfully uses the adhesive in daily practice.

I’ve used Prime&Bond active in a variety of anterior and posterior restorations. In a couple instances, it’s also been extremely useful during emergency visits to seal exposed dentin on broken teeth until we can bring the patient back for a definitive restoration. Especially in those cases, Prime&Bond active provided patients with quick and effective relief.

More broadly, I’ve found great success using it for bonding and cementing posts, veneers, and crowns. Often, when seating crowns, we restore patients’ adjacent teeth as well, so having the ability to use the same product for multiple procedures is both a time- and money-saver for my practice, and it also helps reduce clutter in the operatory.

Low Film Thickness & Ease of Use

My approach for restorations is as follows: isolate (usually with a rubber dam) and prepare the tooth, use phosphoric acid etch on enamel, rinse and dry, and apply Prime&Bond active using a brush to wet all surfaces—keeping the adhesive agitated for 20 seconds. Then, I thoroughly dry the area until I can't see any movement of the adhesive film.

The handling of Prime&Bond active is excellent, and it’s easy to see that it’s been applied to all surfaces of the preparation because of its sheen finish. Thanks to its low film thickness, I don’t have to worry about it pooling and creating a weak point in the restorations or appearing like potential decay in follow-up radiographs.

Flexible & Predictable

I also believe the active moisture control afforded by Prime&Bond active’s patented Active-Guard technology is a very significant feature. We try our best to achieve optimal moisture levels in dentin, but realistically, images taken on an electron microscope prove that’s never truly attainable. Now, we no longer obsess over drying and rewetting the preparation; we just remove visible rinsing water. I’m always confident about achieving an excellent bond with this product.

Lastly, the presence of MDP is beneficial, as we cement a lot of zirconia crowns in our practice. It eliminated the need for our previous zirconia primer, since Prime&Bond active enables both priming and bonding. Just last week, we had a case where we cemented 2 zirconia crowns and did 3 fillings with only an application brush, a dispensing well, and Prime&Bond active. I’m not aware of any other bonding agent that offers this level of flexibility, predictability, and ease of use.
