Dr. Joyce Bassett is the 36th dentist worldwide—and the only one in Arizona—to achieve Accredited Fellow status with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. With over 30 years of smile design experience and 10 operatories in her bustling Scottsdale practice, she’s used countless handpieces over the years to transform her patients' smiles. Her favorite? NSK’s Ti-Max nano95LS. In this article, after years of working with this compact and lightweight electric handpiece, she takes an opportunity to sum up the performance gap between the nano and its competitors.

I’ve always had a combination of electric and air-driven handpieces throughout my career, because they both have their strengths and weaknesses, and choosing one over the other really depends on the treatment. However, my experience with the electrics I’ve used in the past has never been positive, and here’s why.

Lightweight and Balanced

My hands are quite small—I always need to wear the smallest sized gloves—and electric handpieces are heavy and big in my hands. Because they’re heavy, my shoulder and arm begin to hurt as the day progresses, particularly if I’m prepping all day. Another problem I’ve found in the past is that some electrics aren’t efficient when it comes to cutting through zirconia and e.max restorations.

Right after it was introduced, I had the chance to try NSK’s Ti-Max nano95LS handpiece, and what a difference! According to NSK, this handpiece was designed with the female clinician in mind. The nano95LS is tiny, lighter, and more balanced in my hand, and I have more tactile sensation. But even though it’s light, it’s also very strong and powerful. It doesn’t stall out while I’m prepping through zirconia or e.max.

Strong Motor System

The nano95LS handpiece is powered by the NLZ electric micromotor system, which delivers 40% more torque than comparable systems on the market. The motor and the handpiece work together as a team.

Better Visibility, Compact Size

Another great feature of this handpiece is that the illumination from the bright LED light is incredible. I can see everything without a headlamp.

But the No. 1 advantage of the Ti-Max nano95LS is its compact size. With this handpiece, I don’t need as much space, and I have great visibility. This is especially helpful when my patient has a limited mouth opening. The nano95LS is shorter and the small head is light. In my experience, I've found that this combination of attributes makes the Ti-Max nano95LS especially adept at providing control and precision during detailed cosmetic treatments.
