LAUREN YASUDA RAINEY, DDS

Dr. Rainey has been a clinical dentist for more than a decade, and in that time, she has owned and operated her own fee-for-service private practice in Berkeley, CA. She was also a faculty member at her alma mater, the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in the Department of Reconstructive Dental Sciences and the Department of Dental Practice. She is currently on the education team at Bioclear Matrix Systems, teaching injection molded composite techniques to dentists in the U.S. and Canada, a member of the speakers' bureau at Catapult Education, and a key opinion leader for several dental manufacturers. Dr. Rainey is an advocate for women in leadership and has dedicated much of her career to mentoring young women aspiring to healthcare careers.

A "stress baker" since before she was in dental school, Lauren Yasuda Rainey, DDS, often treats dentistry like she treats a recipe: put in the right materials, create a chemical reaction, add heat, and voilà. It’s one reason why she trusts the science behind Pulpdent’s ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow—a self-leveling bulk-fill restorative that supports natural remineralization.* Here, she shares how this next-generation bulk fill has stacked up so far, and how her patients inspired her to take a closer look at her restorative materials and seek out a better solution.

When I owned my practice a mile from UC Berkeley, I was seeing lots of science-minded and health-conscious individuals who wanted to make sure the materials I was using in their mouths were compatible with their health choices. It really made me dive in and find out if there was a restorative out there to address their concerns.

I started asking myself what would happen if I used a traditional composite in a challenging environment, such as when the tooth isn't fully dry because the patient can't stay open. Could I trust that the material would adhere properly? Understanding your patients’ demographics and the unique conditions of their oral environment—saliva levels, tissue health, and more—is critical. You need solutions that can adapt to those variables, and fortunately, Pulpdent has them.

Science That Sticks

I love that the ACTIVA BioACTIVE restoratives release calcium, phosphate, and fluoride, so they support natural remineralization* and encourage apatite formation. You want your materials to work for you, and these do exactly that. The original ACTIVA BioACTIVE-RESTORATIVE has been out for 12 years, and ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow builds on Pulpdent's years of research and proven science—enhancing what has already shown us to be successful both anecdotally and clinically.

A Bioactive Boost of Confidence

I’ve been doing bulk-fill composite restorations almost every day for the past 7 years—especially for older patients with periodontal disease and deep margins—in part because bulk fills eliminate my concerns over depth of cure. Now that there’s a bulk fill with bioactive properties, that’s just a nobrainer for me. I know for sure that it's setting up allthe way at the bottom of the box, and I’ve just been really impressed with how things have looked on recalls and in recall radiographs and photos. ACTIVA BioACTIVE Bulk Flow provides me with a solution that I feel really confident is going to maintain itself.

Just because something is partially broken doesn’t mean we always need to move to veneers or a crown; there are numerous scenarios where composite can be used instead. Composites are meant to help us rebuild, reshape, and maintain natural tooth structure—not just be a white patch on the side of the tooth that's a placeholder for whatever's next. I feel really strongly about that, and if there are ways we can rely on our materials to help slow the breakdown process, I’m all for it.
