Kristen Ranaldo is a periodontal surgical hygienist and educator with over a decade of clinical experience. A top graduate of Farmingdale State College and recipient of the Golden Scaler Award, she holds a PerioLase MVP-7 Hygienist Certification from the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry and is an expert in dental endoscopy. Ranaldo has successfully treated countless periodontal cases using minimally invasive, evidence-based methods and now trains dental professionals nationwide on advanced endoscopic techniques to achieve superior outcomes. She is also a professor at Hostos Community College and lectures nationally on periodontics, technology integration, and patient-centered care.

A seasoned periodontal hygienist at Max Dental Group in Hicksville, NY, Kristen Ranaldo explains how the ergonomic, easy-to-use Newtron P5 B.LED XS from Acteon delivers controlled ultrasonic vibrations to efficiently remove calculus. The powerful scaler allows her to confidently provide safe, comfortable, and efficient treatment—even for her sensitivity-prone geriatric patients.

With over 60 different tips, Acteon’s Newtron P5 B.LED XS piezoelectric scaler has the widest range of tips on the market—and they are sized exceptionally long for easier access. There is also no other company that sells a pure titanium piezo tip to treat implants. I’ve been a periodontal hygienist for more than a decade and I treat a lot of peri-implantitis cases. Getting in between each implant thread with those tips is critical. Having the length, versatility, and range of tips offered with the Newtron is the only way I can do my job properly.

Rarely a Need to Hand Scale

The Newtron P5 B.LED XS uses a linear tip movement to shave off calculus instead of burnishing or embedding it, which is what happens with magnetostrictive scalers. Burnishing calculus may make the tooth feel smooth, but the calculus is still there. Working in perio, that’s the most important thing to me. For a periodontal pocket to heal, there can’t be any residual calculus left behind. With the Newtron, I can access calculus in those deep pockets because of the versatility and length of the tips—and I rarely have to hand scale.

I also use a dental endoscope so I’m never removing subgingival calculus blindly. I can watch myself in real time with the benefit of 100x magnification.

Periodontal patients tend to build up more calculus and are more sensitive than most prophy patients because they have more gum recession. We’re constantly battling a relapse of disease. My geriatric patients especially struggle with water. The Newtron generates less heat, so I use less water, which is helpful for patients with gag reflexes—and less water reduces aerosols. There's also less vibration, which is helpful for patients with high sensitivity. Many patients who've had prior treatments with magnetostrictive scalers say how much more comfortable their treatment is with the Newtron.

The level of power I need is instantly adjusted and compensated depending on the resistance encountered by the tip. There’s no need to press harder when I’m going over a bigger piece of calculus because the power increases on its own. There’s less force and fatigue, and greater efficiency.

All the tips are color-coded to correlate with the power level on the base. If I’m switching a tip, I look at the color and change the dial to match. Acteon is the only company that has this feature, and it’s so much safer for patients. The handpiece has LED illumination at the tip for better visibility. It’s also lighter and a bit wider, making the grip more ergonomic.

I don’t use as much lateral pressure to remove calculus—I barely have to touch it and it comes right off! It really makes me more confident as a clinician.
