STEVEN VORHOLT, DDS, FAAID, DABOI

Dr. Vorholt earned his dental degree from The Ohio State University in 2013. After starting a private practice in Columbus, his passion for dental implant surgery grew, leading to a transition to Scottsdale, AZ, in 2019. There, he focused exclusively on implants, engaging in education, teaching various courses, and mentoring numerous dentists through live surgery education. Dr. Vorholt became a notable figure in the fi eld, presenting at the AAID Annual Conference and lecturing nationally on dental implant topics. Returning to private practice in late 2022 as a traveling implantologist in the Greater Phoenix area, he brought his expertise and mentorship to various practices and doctors, offering comprehensive care throughout the valley prior to establishing his new practice, Santa Barbara Dental Implants.

From endodontic assessment and implant planning to full-mouth rehabilitations, CBCT has immense utility across an array of different dental applications. Bringing together advanced hardware with next-generation, AI-driven software, ACTEON’s Optima 3D is a powerful imaging platform that allows dentists to take advantage of all CBCT has to offer—no matter where they are in their dental career. Here, implantology expert Steven Vorholt, DDS, shares why this system is a smart investment for any full-service practice.

When most clinicians make a major capital investment, they want their purchase to last at least 10 years. However, that’s a very long time in a dentist's skills journey. In 10 years, someone who was just starting to place implants may now be completing complex full-mouth rehabilitations with zygomatic implants.

An Investment That Grows with You

Thanks to its broad field-of-view (FOV) range from 5×5 cm to 17×12 cm, the Optima 3D supports rather than stifles clinical growth, ensuring dentists don’t need to replace their investment as their skills evolve. Having multiple options for FOV scans helps us maintain patient safety according to ALARA principles, and because the unit incorporates state-of-the-art IGZO sensor technology, it also affords better precision, less radiation, and a larger FOV without compromising imaging quality.

That said, it can’t be understated how advantageous the Optima 3D's small footprint is. Especially for older offices adding CBCT for the first time, or those in markets with an extreme premium on space—including my own practice in Santa Barbara, CA—the unit’s compact size packs a real punch.

The ACTEON Imaging Suite software is where the Optima 3D really shines. It combines user- and patient-friendly visualization with a seamless implant planning workflow. For patients, the intuitive interface makes it easy to follow along during diagnostic readings, and for clinicians, behind-the-scenes RealGUIDE tools allow me to do everything needed to successfully complete implant cases.

That includes simplified planning with hundreds of implant systems, precise surgical guide design, and highly accurate bone segmentation—all done inside one software platform.

Smart Features

The Optima 3D additionally integrates AI-powered features that support smarter, more streamlined workflows for my dental team. Whether it's IOS importing and alignment, panoramic curve reconstruction, nerve mapping, or bone segmentation, these AI tools allow more of the diagnostic process to be completed before I even enter the operatory. My staff and I can automate these steps with the click of a button, freeing us up to focus on other tasks.

CBCT Without Compromise

If there’s one misconception about CBCT that the Optima 3D disproves, it’s that a compact and cost-effective system can’t deliver comprehensive performance. But despite its entry-level price point, this is not an entry-level machine.

ACTEON technology is the backbone of my implant-dedicated practice, and the Optima 3D is a powerful part of my workflow. It helps me provide the highest level of care to my patients.
