Peak Universal Bond

Peak Universal Bond is a 7.5% filled light-cured resin ideal for all direct and indirect bonding procedures. It provides optimal bond strength to composite, metal, zirconia, porcelain repair, and post and core procedures. To aid in long-term bond strength, Ultradent formulated Peak with a 0.2% concentration of chlorhexidine. In addition, Peak Universal is compatible with self- and total-etch techniques.

When asked what he liked most about Ultradent’s Peak Universal Bond, one of the 14 dentists who evaluated the adhesive for Dental Product Shopper responded as follows: “The product was easy to use, we experienced no postop sensitivity, and light-curing and thinning the material was very easy.”

Peak Universal Bond’s versatile formulation makes it ideal for all indirect and direct bonding, including post and core procedures. The light-cured adhesive is available in both syringe and bottle delivery, and the addition of 0.2% chlorhexidine may ensure long-term bond strengths.

Bond Strength

Manufacturer Description: Peak Universal produces unsurpassed bond strength on dentin, enamel, composite, metal, porcelain, and zirconia, and enables complete resin impregnation without voids. In a university study comparing the shear bonding strengths of 5 bonding systems,1 the Peak Universal Adhesive System yielded the highest bond strengths to both dentin and enamel. The addition of 0.2% chlorhexidine may improve the long-term bond strength achieved with Peak Universal.

Evaluator Feedback: Comments about bond strength ranged from “good bond strength” to “bond strength for Class 4 restorations is questionable.” When asked what he’d like to see improved, an evaluator who said he would definitely purchase the bond and recommend it colleagues said, “As long as the product strengths remain good, no changes [are needed].” Ninety-three percent of the evaluators rated confidence in bond strength as excellent, very good, or good.

Ease of Use

Manufacturer Description: Peak Universal Bond can be used with both self- and total-etch techniques. Formulated with 7.5% filler, the material’s viscosity produces minimal film thickness (2 ?m) and superior strength.

Evaluator Feedback: Twelve of the 13 evaluators who rated overall ease of use rated it as excellent, very good, or good. “The cloudy appearance makes it easier to see,” said a dentist who noted that he would probably purchase the adhesive and recommend it to colleagues. A dentist who described Peak Universal as “user-friendly” noted that “the viscosity of the material is good; not too runny, not too thick.” When asked about potential improvements, a few other evaluators described the material as thick, with comments such as, “[It was] a little too thick for my taste.”

Ease of Dispensing

Manufacturer Description: Peak Universal Bond’s 2 delivery options maximize ease of use. Bottles enable easy dispensing and convenient delivery with an applicator brush, and syringes provide intraoral control while minimizing waste and preserving critical oxygen-sensitive ingredients.

Evaluator Feedback: Ease of dispensing the material was rated as excellent, very good, or good by 11 evaluators, some of whom cited dispensing as the feature they liked most. “The dispenser with the tip brush was nice to use,” said a dentist who reported that he would definitely purchase the adhesive and recommend it to his colleagues. When asked what they’d like to see improved, a few evaluators noted that it was sometimes difficult to control the amount of material dispensed. One such evaluator noted, “The applicator takes time to get used to; you can easily dispense too much.” Another said, “When pushing on the syringe it was sometimes hard to regulate how much bonding agent would be dispensed.” This same evaluator, who gave the material an overall rating of very good, went on to say, “If the dispensing was different I would have rated this product excellent.”

Postoperative Sensitivity Reduction

Manufacturer Description: In addition to producing excellent bond strength, Peak Universal’s complete and void-free resin impregnation also reduces the possibility of residual sensitivity.

Evaluator Feedback: Comments included there being “no reported postop sensitivity,” and, “[Patients] seemed to not have postop sensitivity—filled adhesive can be very helpful.” Twelve of the 14 evaluators rated the ability to reduce postoperative sensitivity as excellent, very good, or good. “We experienced no postop sensitivity,” said a dentist who gave the material an overall rating of very good.

Overall Satisfaction

Overall satisfaction with Ultradent’s Peak Universal Bond was rated as excellent, very good, or good by 12 evaluators. When asked what he liked most about the product, a dentist in practice for 35 years said, “No postop sensitivity, good bond strength.”
