Quantium™

Quantium is a light-cured, radiopaque universal composite. Quantium combines superior levels of handling and placement ability with exceptional strength to create highly functional and esthetically appealing composite restorations in both the anterior and posterior.

Quantium is available in six VITA® shades (A1, A2, A3, A3.5, B1, B2) in both an opaque body and more translucent enamel, plus two effect shades (Bleach and Incisal). It delivers excellent polishability, high radiopacity, and low volumetric shrinkage. Quantium unit doses can be warmed (up to 68°C for one hour) to enhance flowability without compromising performance.

Quantium is available in 4g syringes, 20ct. unit dose refills, or in two intro kits (syringe and unit dose) that include A2 and A3 body and enamel shades, All-Bond Universal® and Select HV® Etch w/BAC.

Dr. Cristian Secareanu had been hoping to find a strong and esthetic composite that handled well and made restorations easier to place in both the anterior and posterior.

While that might sound like a tall order, BISCO’s Quantium, a light-cured, radiopaque universal composite, fit the bill—allowing him to create highly functional, esthetically appealing restorations.

“BISCO’s Quantium composite material has the best handling and is the easiest to place when restoring not only posterior teeth but also anteriors where esthetics play a big role,” Dr. Secareanu said. “The material seemed to stay exactly where placed, and besides superb handling and ease of blending with existing tooth structure, it was also very easy to polish and smoothen out. It is great to have a single composite type that is perfect for every situation.”

Ease of Handling and Placement

Quantium offers smooth, nonsticky handling and should be placed in 1- to 2-mm increments, with each layer light-cured for 20 seconds. Capsules may be warmed for up to 1 hour at 68°C (154°F) to achieve a more flowable viscosity.

Available in syringe and unit-dose kits, DPS evaluators received the latter, which includes a 10-count unit-dose flex tube of A2 Body, A2 Enamel, A3 Body, and A3 Enamel, along with a 6-mL bottle of All-Bond Universal and a 5-g syringe of Select HV Etch w/BAC.

“My favorite attribute about this product was the handling,” Dr. Daniel Hwang said. “When the composite wasn’t warmed, it was stiff and easier to pack into difficult-to-restore areas. When it is warm, it flows well and is very malleable.”

Dr. Peter Guirguis appreciated that Quantium “didn’t stick to instruments,” while Dr. Dwight Rastetter said, “I felt it was easy to handle and sculpt, and I did not warm the product.” Dr. David Martin especially liked “the flow of the warmed material” and the ability to shape it.

“This is the best handling composite material I have used,” Dr. Jeffrey Greene shared, and Dr. Charles Elkington added, “I liked the thicker viscosity. It made sculpting in the anterior much easier.” Dr. Nora Donatelli also lauded Quantium for its “adaptation to prep surfaces,” but wished for a “slightly softer consistency.”

“I was much more time efficient when placing it,” particularly in cases with cervical decay, Dr. Kyle Lisenby said. He found the material required “less chair time, meaning that patients were happier.”

Shade Matching and Esthetics

Designed for easy polishing and stain resistance, Quantium allows clinicians to deliver esthetic results that effectively maintain their appearance over time.

“It seems like a good product that has good esthetics,” Dr. Abraham Jaskiel assured. “I liked that it has a body and an enamel shade. The body shade was not too opaque, and the enamel shade just gave it a bit of depth.” Dr. Anthony Vocaturo agreed it was “great for layering” and was pleased with having “multiple shade options.”

“The shades looked good and blended well,” Dr. Donatelli said. She continued, “The demarcation between the tooth and filling was nicely blurred.”

“It was successful in providing a good, stable match when paired with the shade guide [in the brochure],” Dr. Hwang said, and as Dr. Martin commented, “The finish was excellent.”

Versatile Performance

Quantium can be used in all restoration classes, blending seamlessly with natural tooth structure when applied with a single shade or layered with multiple shades.

“This product has the versatility for all classes of fillings,” Dr. Greene said. “Having one material for doing all classes of fillings and buildups is efficient and economical.”

“We had a young patient who present-ed with a lot of cavities—almost every single tooth was decayed,” Dr. Secareanu recalled. “We used the Quantium kit and restored all teeth, both anterior and posterior, from small occlusals to very large anterior restorations. Everything looked great at the end, esthetics and function were both restored, and the patient was extremely happy to have avoided possible root canals and some possible crown work for the time being.”

Dr. Jaskiel treated “a patient who walked into a wall and broke a front tooth,” sharing, “I was able to build it up nicely, and the esthetics looked great.”

Dr. Donatelli emphasized, “The ability to get a good anterior result using the same material in the posterior streamlines products and time.”

Overall Satisfaction

“I think this product would be a good universal composite option,” Dr. Rastetter said. “The etchant, single-component bonding agent, and composite all worked well together.”

Dr. Martin said, “I liked the material and would be happy to replace the product I’ve been using.” Similarly, Dr. Vocaturo called Quantium “a great product” and said he would consider using it again.

“Just when you think the advancement in composite technology has achieved it all, this material takes it to the next level,” Dr. Greene said. For Dr. Secareanu, “It has become one our favorite direct restorative materials for daily use.”
