DENTSPLY SIRONA
SmartLite Pro Evaluation
For reliable clinical outcomes, this advanced curing light features a compact pen-style grip, state-of-the-art optics and design, and remarkable curing performance
Like many dentists, Dr. John Horn considers Class II restorations the bread and butter of his practice. So, using a reliable curing light that produces a complete cure is key to ensuring the long-term success of his Class II restorations—and his practice. While on a mission to find a dependable curing light that would fully cure deep interproximal boxes, Dr. Horn discovered Dentsply Sirona’s versatile, forward-thinking LED curing light, the SmartLite Pro, which he said hits all the marks of a curing light that a general dentist can trust.
“The SmartLite Pro provides a consistent depth of cure of 4 mm and features a curing tip diameter of 10 mm to cover most restorations completely,” Dr. Horn reported. In addition to the light’s remarkable curing performance, he appreciates the modern design and function of the charging base. “I loved the solid metal base with the extra battery and charging port, the built-in radiometer to easily check to make certain your light is operating at full strength, and the tip holders for extra curing tips.” The SmartLite Pro “appears to be a solid product from a well-respected company,” Dr. Horn added. “Any product that makes our job easier and simpler makes for a better patient experience.”
Design & Ergonomics
The compact SmartLite Pro features “an intuitive ergonomic design and a lightweight pen-style grip that eliminates hand fatigue,” said Janet Williams, DDS. “The size of the light and the base are both ideal—not too big, but not too small,” noted Dr. Mary Gaddis, and Dr. Jodi Lampert said, “We really like the light weight and small size of the light and its portability.” Other comments about the light’s design were: “I liked that the handle spun so the button was always within reach,” “The barrier sheaths do not fit well,” and “The vibration and beep that signals the end of curing along with the easily accessible button is a very smart design.”
The cordless SmartLite Pro features a multifunctional charging base with a built-in radiometer, room for extra tips, and an additional battery. “I really like the design of the base,” said Dr. Gaddis. “It doesn’t take up a lot of space and holds the second battery very nicely.” Dr. Ami Bhagat called it a “portable, compact light that is quick and easy to use,” and Dr. Williams declared, “The cordless feature is unbeatable,” explaining that a ready-to-go spare battery means no downtime, and the portability allows the light to be moved from room to room.

Curing Performance
With state-of-the-art LED optics and an average irradiance of 1250 mW/cm2, the SmartLite Pro provides a consistent, quality cure, according to Dentsply Sirona. A large 10-mm curing diameter, 8-mm depth of cure, and excellent beam collimation ensure a quick, complete cure for reliable outcomes. “The light definitely cured the composite quickly and effectively, and the intensity of the light will satisfy any doubts of a depth of cure question,” shared Dr. Thomas Walker. Dr. Horn agreed, saying, “The large diameter tip ensures the whole restoration is being cured,” and Dr. Raymond Morse said it seemed to cure deeper than other lights. The broad diameter of the curing light saves time compared to using smaller tips that must be moved to different positions and cured several times, noted Dr. Williams.
Stating that the “easy, 10-second cure was very nice,” Dr. Gaddis suggested the ability to program different times. Dr. Lampert said she needed to use an orange handheld shield to protect her eyes, and Dr. Trupti Nadkarni said the short curing time reduced her overall chairside time.
Access & Versatility
“This light has a small diameter and fits in the mouth easily,” noted Dr. Bhagat, and Dr. Gaddis said it worked great for sealants on young patients with small mouths. Dr. Nadkarni suggested altering the angle of the light to access some areas more easily, while Dr. Williams stated, “The tip heads can access all areas of the mouth, unrestricted, to perform as required, effortlessly.”
The SmartLite Pro features interchangeable, 360° rotational tips for a variety of clinical indications and can be upgraded with attachments, such as a transillumination tip for interproximal caries detection. “Including a radiometer and coupling the curing light with the transillumination tip, all in one package, is visionary,” commented Dr. Williams. “I love the transillumination feature,” said Dr. Morse, explaining that it allowed him to find an interproximal fracture on the first day he used the light. Dr. Williams said she used the transillumination tip to identify several radial fracture lines that were not visible to the eyes. “The patient was understandably very impressed by a tool that could literally bring the hidden fractures to light,” she said.

Overall Satisfaction
“The SmartLite Pro is a nice portable curing light that has a modern state-of-the-art appearance,” shared Dr. Bhagat. Dr. Horn decided, “It’s a very versatile, ergonomic light that fits well in my daily practice routine,” and Dr. Williams concluded, “It was outstanding in all categories and exceeded my expectations! It’s a must-have for every dentist. I didn’t expect it to, but it blew me away!”
