A piezoelectric ultrasonic power scaler is an important tool to use during patients’ cleaning appointments. But dental professionals have more to consider than the effective and efficient removal of calculus. The scaling process should be gentle and thorough so that patients have a pleasant experience. And to avoid user fatigue, an ultrasonic scaler should be easy and comfortable to operate.
According to the team of Dental Product Shopper clinicians who evaluated ACTEON’s PURE Newtron B.LED and B.LED XS, these piezoelectric ultrasonic power scalers include all the conveniences that a pa-tient and clinician appreciate.
“I have used many ultrasonic/sonic devices in my 26 years of practice, and have never truly fallen in love with a machine like I have with this one,” Rhonda McCrory, a North Dakota hygienist, said of the PURE Newtron B.LED and B.LED XS. “I know a lot about machines, and this one has nailed it with the combination of gentleness, thoroughness, and efficiency.”
Comfort, Efficiency, and Ease of Use
“My patients comment on how little—if any—discomfort there is, which makes me more comfortable using it on those I have shied away from in the past,” McCrory said. “I actually look forward to some of the more challenging patients because this machine is so efficient and gentle. I have had so many of my patients comment on how much they love it! Most of my patients comment on the gentleness, which is awesome for them, but I also know how thoroughly I am cleaning their teeth with absolutely no visualization issues due to water spray. I truly love this machine!”
The refi ned curves of the Newtron SLIM B.LED hand-piece facilitate handling and accessibility while producing bright, LED light for better visibility, according to ACTEON. And the B.LED XS features a 300ml (500ml optional) tank for independent and portable irrigation.
Stacy Powell, RDH, said she loves the ability to remove stain easily with the scaler. “I have found it enables me to remove sub calculus on a patient in a more comfortable fashion,” she noted. Dr. Louis Palacios, who rated all features of the scaler as excellent, called the PURE Newtron B.LED “the most comfortable instrument for effectively cleaning teeth,” but said there is a learning curve for a hygienist using magnostrictives.
Several evaluators commented on the accuracy and amount of spray when using the scaler. McCrory said, “I love the efficiency in removing calculus and debris with minimal spray, so my visualization is great.”
When asked for suggested improvements, hygienist Stephanie Cohen mentioned a foot pedal to control he power and water level. A Kansas-based hygienist called the scaler an amazing product and noted that she’s “not drowning patients with excessive water.”
Compatible with more than 80 tips, the PURE Newtron B.LED and B.LED XS scalers can be used for a variety of applications, such as scaling, periodontics, endodontics, and re-storative procedures. The evaluators praised the range of inserts available. McCrory said, “The variety of tips is awesome! I’m able to access areas I’ve never been able to before.” Maryland dentist Dr. William Yant noted that he liked the inserts’ availability for multiple applications—from hygiene and crown preps to root canal therapy.
Canadian hygienist Josee Laferriere said she would like to see more tip styles, such as a TK-1 or -2 in a debriding tip. “The slim design of the inserts and range of inserts available are my favorite qualities,” she added.
Features and Ergonomics
According to ACTEON, the PURE Newtron B.LED scalers feature technologic and clinical innovations, including an exclusive feature—the Cruise Control System. The system automatically adapts ultrasonic power according to the resistance encountered by the tip, which reduces user fatigue.
Clinicians can choose power levels easily with the LED-lit color-coded power dial. The slim, ergonomic handpiece is easy and comfortable to operate, and also produces bright LED light. While one hy-gienist said she liked the light feature best, Dr. Palacios said the power levels and slim handpiece with light were some of the features he liked best.
Some of the evaluators commented on the unit’s noise level and portability. “I love the fact that it is portable and can be moved easily from room to room,” Powell said. “This makes it easier for my doctor and me to share the unit...till we purchase another one very soon!” Cohen added, “The compact unit takes less space on my counter.”
“The noise level is so much quieter than all of the other machines in my offi ce,” McCrory said. Powell said she has found that the noise level varies depending on the tip she is using at the time.
Laferriere, who said she would defi nitely recommend the scaler and rated her overall satisfaction as excellent, summed up her thoughts: “I have tried many other ultrason-ics, both piezoelectric and magnetorestric-tive, and fi nd [these] to be the best choice for my dental hygiene practice.”
