Eleven hygienists and dentists, all current Newtron users, evaluated Acteon's piezoelectric ultrasonic power scalers for Dental Product Shopper. Both units feature technologic and clinical innovations that provide both patients and clinicians with a new and vastly improved experience in ultrasonic dental care.
Ease of Use: Features and Ergonomics
Manufacturer Description: Both the Newtron B.LED and the Newtron B.LED XS feature the exclusive Cruise Control System, which adapts ultrasonic power according to the resistance encountered by the tip in real time, generating unmatched power while reducing user fatigue. Power selection is made simple by the LED-lit, glowing, color-coded power dial. The refined curves of the NEWTRON SLIM B.LED handpiece facilitate handling and accessibility while producing bright, LED light for better visibility. The B.LED XS features a 300 mL (500 mL optional) tank for independent and portable irrigation. The Newtron B.LED and B.LED XS also have available F.L.A.G. for B.LED technology that allows you to apply a fluorescein liquid that adheres to plaque. An optional blue LED light in the handpiece makes the plaque glow and enhances treatment efficiency and decreases treatment time.
Evaluator Feedback:“I love the fact that it is portable and can be moved easily from room to room,” a Georgia hygienist said. When asked about potential improvements, one hygienist noted, “The cord was rather stiff,” and another suggested, “A key should be provided with each tip.” A Pennsylvania dentist told DPS, “[The scaler] is the most comfortable instrument for effectively cleaning teeth.”
Efficiency
Manufacturer Description:Because of the continuous and automatic power adjustment generated by the Cruise Control System, treatment is fast, smooth, and exceptionally efficient. The piezoelectric scalers are compatible with more than 80 tips, making them ideal for performing most applications, such as scaling, periodontics, endodontics, and restorative procedures.
Evaluator Feedback: Some observations about the scaler’s efficiency were, “I love the ability to remove stain easily,” and, “I actually look forward to some of the more challenging patients because this machine is so efficient and gentle.” Several evaluators commented on the accuracy and amount of spray, and one remarked, “I love the efficiency in removing calculus and debris with minimal spray so my visualization is great.” One hygienist called it an “amazing product” that did not generate an excessive amount of water. When asked for suggested improvements, an Indianapolis hygienist remarked, “[I would like] a foot pedal to control the power and water level.”
Several evaluators cited the range of inserts as a favorite feature, including one who commented, “The variety of tips is awesome! I’m able to access areas I’ve never been able to before.” A Maryland dentist noted, “The inserts available for multiple applications, from hygiene, to crown preps, and root canal therapy [is what I liked most].”
Patient Comfort

Evaluator Feedback: “My patients comment on how little, if any, discomfort there is, which makes me more comfortable using it on those [for whom] I have shied away from [using scalers] in the past,” one hygienist said. She went on to share her patients’ comments, such as, “It feels like a soft cleaning,” and “Don’t you ever get rid of this machine!” Another evaluator noted, “[The scaler] enables me to remove subcalculus in a more comfortable fashion,” and also told DPS, “I have had patients tell me it is a bit louder (highpitched) than they would like…depending on the tip I am using.”
Overall Satisfactionan
Nine of the evaluators said they would definitely or probably purchase the Newtron B.LED or B.LED XS in the future, and 10 would recommend it to colleagues. A Canadian hygienist who rated her overall satisfaction as excellent said, “I have tried many other ultrasonics, both piezoelectric and magnetostrictive, and find [these] to be the best choice for my dental hygiene practice.” A Fargo, ND, evaluator who also rated overall satisfaction as excellent concluded, “Most of my patients comment on the gentleness, which is awesome for them, but I also know how thoroughly I am cleaning their teeth with absolutely no visualization issues due to water spray. I truly love this machine!”
