Comfort, Safety, and Power

When it comes to electrics, DPS readers choose the compact design and undisputed power of NSK micromotors and handpieces

Air driven or electric? That is the question. While there’s no crime in having both types of handpieces on deck, it’s not uncommon for clinicians to prefer one over the other, depending on the task at hand.

“While we have some air-driven handpieces in our hygiene rooms for quick bite adjustments or to smooth chipped teeth, I feel that electric handpieces are far superior, especially for cutting and decay removal,” noted Dr. Joshua Haremza. “They give you a consistent rpm and do not stall out on the tooth.” While consistent power is certainly a perk of using electric handpieces, the motors that drive them have a reputation for being significantly heavier than their air counterparts. That may be true for some handpiece motors—but not for the NLZ, a lightweight and compact micromotor that’s uniquely designed for comfort, safety, and powerful performance.

Initially introduced to NSK’s NLZ micromotor and Ti-Max Z95L contra-angle during a DPS product review several years go, Dr. Haremza has continued to enjoy the system to this day. “I have used several different brands of electric micromotors over the years and have found the NLZ is smaller and simpler to use, while providing the same, if not better, results.”

Size Matters!

From scanners to x-ray units to computers, a rising amount of equipment has made its way into the dental operatory, forcing many dentists to ask themselves, “Where do I put all this stuff?”

One of the perks of the NLZ micromotor is that the control unit is separate from the main unit, allowing for a more flexible installation style. The main unit fits under the counter so that only the control unit is visible, freeing up more space around the dental chair. In addition to its space-saving design, the NLZ’s smaller micromotor makes it easy to handle and provides excellent balance with less hand fatigue. “The compact size was very important to me. It is lightweight and easy to use,” shared Dr. Haremza.

Power and Convenience

Offering 4.2 Ncm of torque in general mode, the NLZ can be used for a variety of high- and low-speed treatments, while intuitive preprogrammed settings with multiple speed presets maximize its ease of use. “The preprogrammed settings are easy and helpful,” said Dr. Haremza. “I routinely change the settings and speed based on whether I’m doing a preparation, caries removal, or polishing. It literally takes me seconds, which I find very convenient.
