Directa Dental: Leveraging the Best Tools for Ergonomics & Efficiency
Two of Directa Dental’s DPS Best Products combine ergonomics with efficiency for quick, easy, and comfortable extractions on both sides of the chair
While dental professionals may always strive to save their patients’ natural dentition, in some scenarios, extraction and implant restoration are inevitable. If it seems impossible to make this procedure even remotely comfortable for your patients...think again.
Directa Dental offers two unique solutions designed to easily cut the periodontal ligament and perform extractions with less force and trauma. In addition to Directa's commitment to providing easier extractions, these products share another common thread—they have both been deemed DPS Best Products by dozens of clinicians.
Cutting to the Chase
A team of DPS evaluators gave the Luxator P-series instruments, which are designed to efficiently cut the periodontal ligament prior to extraction, particularly high marks when it came to both ergonomics and cutting ability. The extremely sharp and thin periotome tips are coated with titanium nitride for enhanced durability and do not need sharpening.
"The Luxators have allowed me to confidently extract teeth atraumatically, which is especially important when preparing sites for future implant placement,” shared Mazhar Alhadid, DDS, who said the periotomes perfectly fit his criteria for high-quality, durable instruments that are well designed and inexpensive.
Another perk of Luxator P-series instruments is their lightweight and penholder grip, which improves access and control. “The ergonomic grip of the handles is very comfortable and helpful when exerting apical pressure around the roots of hopeless teeth,” shared Dr. Michael LaMarche, and Dr. Alhadid agreed, adding, “They are light, easy to grip, and extremely effective in severing the PDL.”
Luxator P-series periotomes are color-coded and feature 4 blade configurations for all types of clinical situations—straight, inverted curve, contra-angle, and dual-edged.
“The various designs and angulations of the instruments allow for tooth-specific and condition-specific applications, with minimal trauma to the patient,” added Dr. Alhadid. “They are now part of every extraction set up in my office.
Extractions without Trauma
Unlike traditional forceps that require brute force, the instruments in the Physics Forceps – Standard Series combine leverage with a patented “beak and bumper” technique. Although learning this new technique takes a bit of effort up front, for Dr. Angela Landrowski, being able to keep patients—not to mention tens of thousands of dollars in revenue—in-house for extractions has been well worth the small learning curve. “I went to 2 courses, and it took me a little while to gain my confidence, but I do about 75% of my own extractions now,” she said. “I have begun doing more and more surgery, including extractions, surgical extractions, and bone grafts.”
Each of the 4 instruments in the Physics Forceps – Standard Series are designed and clearly marked for use in a specific quadrant of the mouth—Upper Right, Upper Left, Upper, Anterior, and Lower Universal. Each instrument operates as an elevator using a single first-class lever: One handle is connected to a bumper, which acts as a fulcrum, while the other handle is connected to a beak, which is positioned on the lingual or palatal root. Once the instrument is properly placed, the dentist rotates the handles a few degrees using slow, steady wrist movement with no squeezing.
“These instruments lessen the force needed to deliver a tooth, and using less force is better for my hands,” explained Dr. John Leitner, who has arthritis and had previously been unable to perform his own extractions. Dr. Charley Cheney III has been using the system for over 5 years now and shared that extractions in his office are now quick, easy, and comfortable for the patient. “No one in my office is worried about extractions due to our training and knowledge of Physics Forceps,” he added.
