Dr. Lowe has used Grandio and GrandioSO in his clinical practice for many years. Since Admira Fusion represents a new dental material that is purely ceramic based, he was interested to learn more about ORMOCER technology and how it could benefit his patients. He shared his views on the groundbreaking material with Dental Product Shopper.

Admira Fusion is based on the combination of the nano-hybrid technology of Grandio and Admira’s ORMOCER chemistry. It represents an entirely new class of material—nano-hybrid ORMOCER (which incidentally is an acronym for organically modified ceramic, a combination of inorganic ceramic and organic materials). I can now place purely ceramic-based restorations at chairside with the familiar techniques of traditional direct composites. Admira Fusion offers numerous clinical benefits for a wide range of indications.

Extremely Low Shrinkage

Silicon oxide forms the chemical base for both the filler and the resin matrix of Admira Fusion. This innovative ”Pure Silicate Technology“ offers several advantages, not the least of which is very low shrinkage (1.25% by volume) and, in turn, extremely low shrinkage stress. That translates into consistently great marginal integrity.

Biocompatibility

Admira Fusion contains none of the traditional monomers, like Bis-GMA or HEMA, that escape after light-curing. Its organically modified ceramics make Admira Fusion highly biocompatible. I can use it with confidence on patients with certain allergies or who’ve previously experienced sensitivities to other composites, specifically those containing conventional monomers.

Handling and Esthetics

Admira Fusion exhibits a non-sticky, smooth consistency. It adapts readily to preparation walls and is very easy to sculpt to the anatomy I want. After curing, it polishes to a high gloss simply and quickly with points and brushes. The high final surface hardness and smooth finish results in restorations that are durable and resistant to wear and bacterial adhesion.

Further enhancing the esthetics of this high luster, VOCO has developed an innovative and versatile shading system. Depending on the particular case, Admira Fusion can be used as a single-shade system or a multi-shade system. The material comes in 10 universal VITA shades along with 4 special shades and 4 opaque dentin shades for layering techniques.

Admira Fusion is extremely color stable, highly radiopaque, and compatible with all bonding systems.

The material is offered in a bulk-fill or fast-track formulation, Admira Fusion x-tra, using the same nano- ORMOCER technology. Admira Fusion x-tra can be applied in layers of up to 4 mm and cures reliably. The universal shade further simplifies handling, providing excellent esthetics by adapting, chameleon-like, to surrounding tooth structure.

Additionally, VOCO is planning to launch a flowable version soon.
