TheraCal LC

DPS readers embrace the science behind restorative dentistry in their choice of TheraCal LC as a simple and reliable material that protects and insulates the pulp

TheraCal LC for direct and indirect pulp capping When released on contact with tooth structure, calcium ions can have a positive effect on the recovery of pulp and enamel. While it’s been clinically documented that the rapid and effective delivery of calcium can repair and heal dentin, clinicians have faced challenges with various calcium-releasing restorative materials that can be difficult to place and require long setting times.

That’s why BISCO’s family of THERA products has been a much-needed problem solver for the dental profession by offering the best of both worlds—materials that release calcium ions while being easier to handle, place, and manipulate during procedures.

Stable and Durable

As the forerunner of the THERA family, TheraCal LC is a light-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate-filled material designed for use in direct and indirect pulp capping and as a protective liner under composites, amalgams, cements, and other base materials. It can be used as an alternative to calcium hydroxide, glass ionomers, zinc oxide eugenol, or other restorative materials.

While TheraCal LC contains ingredients similar to mineral trioxide aggregate, its proprietary formulation consists of tricalcium silicate particles in a hydrophilic matrix that allows for significant calcium release—making it a uniquely stable and durable material.

“TheraCal LC can assist in improving the prognosis of the procedure,” said surgical prosthodontist Dr. Paul L. Child Jr. “It can be successfully used as part of any dental adhesive regimen used in minimally invasive dentistry.”

While similar products require hand mixing, TheraCal LC comes in a flowable syringe for simple delivery. It is supplied in ready-to-use syringes with 22-gauge disposable dispensing tips to allow for controlled and precise placement and accurate delivery in deep-cavity preparations.

For Orange County, CA, clinician Dr. Hatem Abdelhadi, TheraCal LC offers a simple way to maintain vital teeth for his patients. Using the material, he can prepare restorations that have minor pulp exposure without needing to do a root canal.

“There hasn’t been a product like this before,” he shared. “I’ve treated patients with decay that extended to the pulp chamber, and after placing TheraCal LC and performing the restoration, the patient returned asymptomatic. It was great, and the patient loved that we avoided a root canal.”

Meet the Whole THERA Family

TheraCal LC is just one member of a growing THERA family of products designed to be more compatible with tooth structure. During pulpotomy treatment, dual-cured, resin-modified calcium silicate TheraCal PT acts as a barrier and protectant of the pulpal complex. And, with universal material compatibility, dual-cured TheraCem balances bond strength and sustained calcium and fluoride release with moisture insolubility and ease of use.
